Learning about the 5 levels of care in addiction treatment can be the key to unlocking lasting recovery. Each stage of recovery serves a unique purpose in healing both body and mind, providing a structured pathway from crisis intervention to long-term wellness.
At Midwest Recovery Centers, we make that journey as supportive, comfortable, and personal as possible. From detox addiction treatment to long-term outpatient care, we meet you where you are and walk with you every step forward.
Let’s break down the levels of care and how Midwest Recovery Centers in Kansas City, MO, guides individuals toward a life free from addiction and full of possibility.
Level 1: Medical Detox – The Foundation of Recovery
Detox is the first step in many treatment options, allowing patients to safely remove substances from their bodies under medical supervision, laying the groundwork for subsequent treatment.
Midwest Recovery Centers is a residential detox program with 24/7 nursing support, including registered nurses monitoring vital signs and withdrawal symptoms. Clients stay in comfortable, semi-private rooms that promote rest and healing.
Our medical team provides medication-assisted support to alleviate withdrawal symptoms, ensuring safety and minimizing discomfort.
The detox experience includes holistic therapies such as music and art therapy, and yoga, promoting emotional and spiritual wellness. Group support sessions alleviate isolation and foster connections with others sharing similar experiences. Each client receives a comprehensive medical evaluation to assess health and identify co-occurring conditions that need attention.
Why it matters: Without safe detox, many patients may not progress. Our supportive, medically monitored environment ensures clients can detox from any substance without restrictions, providing comprehensive care for all addiction types and severities. Level 2: Residential Treatment – Where Transformation Begins
Residential treatment comes after detox, and that is where the real change is likely to start. The program provides clients with a residence, allowing them to escape daily stressors and focus on their recovery in a nurturing environment.
Our residential program at Midwest Recovery Centers treatment includes individual and group therapy sessions led by licensed therapists using effective methods.
We employ Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), among others. Clients receive 56 hours of therapy each week through various activities to support healing and skill development.
We address the whole person, not just the addiction, through mindfulness, music therapy, and nutritional counseling. Our 12-step approach and family support aim to mend relationships and build healthy support systems. For those facing both addiction and mental health challenges, we tackle both issues simultaneously.
We provide fun activities like pickleball, basketball, exercise classes, and outdoor dining to keep our clients active. They can also enjoy our rock garden maze, kettlebells, yoga mats, and supervised gym and outdoor activities.
Residential addiction treatment at Midwest Recovery Centers offers a supportive, structured place to stay for people who need steady guidance after detox or when outpatient care isn’t enough.
Residential drug addiction treatment focuses on developing coping skills, addressing underlying causes, and stabilizing mental health with personalized services. We use approaches like trauma-informed care, somatic experiencing, and first-hand therapies to help clients deal with deep issues and find lasting recovery tools.
Level 3: Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) – Bridging Independence
Once a person has built a solid foundation in residential treatment, they may transition to PHP. This level still includes full-day programming but allows clients to return home or to a sober living home in the evening, creating a bridge between intensive inpatient care and independent living.
We provide free housing for transitional living support during PHP, removing barriers to treatment and ensuring a stable environment. The program employs evidence-based treatments, including group therapy and comprehensive medication management.
Midwest Recovery Centers’ PHP services include:
- 30+ hours of clinical treatment each week
- Intensive therapeutic support from a dedicated clinical team
- Regular individual therapy sessions
- Ongoing medical care and monitoring
- Psychiatric evaluations for medication management
- Support focused on mental health stabilization
The program emphasizes developing independence and life skills, allowing clients to apply recovery tools in real-world situations.
PHP bridges the gap between inpatient and outpatient treatment, allowing patients to practice recovery tools in real settings with strong clinical support. This level facilitates getting an addict into treatment while maintaining connections to work, family, and community, making the transition sustainable and manageable.
Level 4: Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) – Maintaining Connection
Our IOP suits clients ready to return to work or school but still require support. This level signifies progress toward independence while ensuring therapeutic connection and accountability.
At Midwest Recovery Centers, IOP offers:
- Group therapy three evenings a week (Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 6:00–9:00 PM), allowing clients to keep their daily routines while receiving structured support
- Biweekly individual counseling focused on personal challenges and the transition toward independent living
- Random drug testing to reinforce accountability, support recovery goals, and build trust with family and employers
- Continued access to alumni programs that strengthen long-term community connections in recovery
- Encouraged participation in 12-step programs and community meetings to expand support networks outside treatment
- Case management to support long-term goals, including employment, housing, legal needs, and family relationships
- Opportunities to participate in CBT and other evidence-based therapies to apply practical recovery skills in everyday life
IOP is a powerful option for staying connected while regaining independence, enabling individuals to maintain recovery while rebuilding their lives in their communities.
Level 5: Outpatient & Aftercare – Lifelong Support
Even after structured treatment ends, recovery is a lifelong journey. That’s why aftercare is a vital final level of care that addresses what are the treatments for addiction in the long term, providing ongoing support and resources for sustained recovery.
Our team continues to support clients through ongoing therapy sessions with flexible scheduling to accommodate work and life commitments. Life skills coaching helps clients navigate challenges in employment, relationships, and daily living situations that can trigger relapse without proper support.
Alumni events maintain community connections and peer support, creating a network of people who are familiar with the recovery journey and can provide encouragement during difficult times.
We provide referrals to community resources and sober living facilities when needed, ensuring clients have access to appropriate housing and support services in their communities. Case management services help people get consistent care and aim to prevent relapse by tackling problems before they become too big.
If you’re wondering how to get an addict into treatment, know that recovery doesn’t stop when the program ends. We’re here for the long haul, providing the ongoing support that makes lasting recovery possible and helping clients build lives they’re proud to live in sobriety.

“It is very important to understand what types of care there are for someone who is battling addiction, as each person needs something a little different. For nearly every case, it is not safe to cease use of any drug or alcohol without medical attention. This is why we provide a state-of-the-art medical detox, followed by remaining residential care for a total of 30 days of inpatient treatment. We want to ensure that anyone coming into our care is not just wanting a fast detox, but is committed to a full inpatient stay where they can understand why they used a substance to cope with life, and build new coping mechanisms for their stress and emotional discomfort, to ensure they remain in recovery long term. Most people have trouble staying sober after inpatient care, so we recommend our transitional long-term program following our 30-day inpatient. This is what I did when I came to MRC, I was committed to the year-long program. It gave me a safe place to heal and build up what I needed to recover and stay sober. We also have a Community IOP program that is offered in the evenings for those who cannot commit to staying in our structured housing.
